Looking for the Best Barbecue Restaurants in San Diego?

Check out Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill!

If you’re in need of some authentic Midwest barbecue but still want an upscale ambience, Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill has you covered.

Wood Ranch, one of the best barbecue restaurants in San Diego, has 15 locations in Orange County and recently opened their doors for the first time in the Hazard Center near Qualcomm Stadium.

When I hear the word “barbecue,” I typically think of picnic tables, plastic baskets of brisket and about five different sports being played from televisions littering the establishment. That’s not the case here! Wood Ranch BBQ and Grill is the perfect place for a couple of meat eaters who want to enjoy a romantic night out together. It’s great for intimate gatherings and large parties as well.

They even have a gorgeous bar to enjoy a couple of drinks with friends after work. More importantly, for those of you who are just looking for a place to find mouth-watering barbecue, the time is now and this is the place!

When I visited Wood Ranch, I thought I had walked into the wrong place! I had never seen such an attractive barbecue joint before. And let me tell you, this was no “joint.” From the mood lighting to the flawless customer service, I was blown away before I even ordered anything.

This is definitely carb and carnivore heaven.

When you visit, be sure to ask for Tim. He was so much fun and incredibly knowledgeable about their entire menu, back to front. His service was impeccable, he made great suggestions when I asked him for his input and he always made sure we were taken care of. It was definitely a breath of fresh air being served by someone who really knew how to take care of us as people and not as “Table #12.”

We started the dining experience with some drinks. My date ordered a frosty pale ale and I ordered the Vintage Bulleit.

I love whiskey and the occasional fruity cocktail so this is the perfect combination of both. Fresh berries are muddled to perfection and complement the Bulleit Rye seamlessly.

Berries and whiskey, you ask? It sounds like an odd combination, but trust me. This was one of the best whiskey concoctions I’ve ever had.

First we were brought fresh garlic rolls. My date actually ordered a second basket of rolls before we ordered our appetizer! I didn’t even try to stop him. This is definitely carb and carnivore heaven. Next, Tim recommended we try their Famous Shredded Onions. These thinly sliced strips of heaven were so delicious. They were wonderfully crispy and melted in my mouth after every bite.

A Tasty Tip: Dip EVERYTHING in the barbecue sauce (made in house.) They also sell their barbecue sauce by the half pint, pint and quart. Try all of their flavors, including Original, Chipotle Cherry, Habanera Peach and Carolina.

We decided we needed to try a little bit of everything. So we sampled the Tri-Tip, Pulled Pork, Brisket and Baby Back Ribs in all of their sauces. I’m originally from Kansas City, so I’m pretty familiar with quality barbecue. The food here is absolutely unbelievable. I was so impressed. I felt like I needed to call my relatives back on the farm and let them know I had found true Midwest barbecue!

We ordered the mac-n-cheese and mashed sweet potatoes as our two sides. Again, we were blown away at the unique preparation of each dish.

I was even more impressed when I found out all of their ingredients are made in house.

And they also have a gluten-free menu for those of you who would prefer a less meaty and healthier option!

We decided to polish off our already perfect dinner with some dessert. We let our server, Tim, choose from the dessert menu for us. He chose the flourless chocolate cake. This cake is made with coffee grounds instead of flour. I would have never known had he not told me what was in it. The cake was light and fluffy and perfectly moist, like a brownie, fresh out of the oven and topped with vanilla ice cream. I’ll be having dreams about this cake until my next visit. It was divine.

From beginning to end, I had an incredible evening. The service was superb, the food was out of this world, and the atmosphere was elegant and stylish. I would recommend Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill to anyone who appreciates incredible barbecue and an overall flawless dining experience.
