Attention! The California State Military Museum is the state’s official military museum and research center, which features three floors of weapons, uniforms, photos and over 30,000 other artifacts that reflect California and U.S. military history from Colonial times through today. The museum houses an 18,000 volume research library and conference and meeting facilities.

The California Military Museum opened its doors in 1990. This large, three-story museum is dedicated to those men and women who have served or are now serving in the military, making sacrifices on behalf of the United States. It is the official military museum and historical research center of the State of California.

The museum houses an extensive and valuable collection, representing military articles of all historical description. Its collection demonstrates and interprets the importance of the military in the development of the State of California, its contributions to the United States as well as the world at large. Historical periods begin with pre-colonial California and continue through military support after the San Francisco earthquake, California’s role in both World Wars, development of our Coast Artillery Units, the California Naval Militia and the California Cavalry to our current military involvements.   Our most ambitious project, the Wall of Honor memorializes those Californian servicemen and women who have died in the international war against terrorism. The list of those KIAs (Killed in Action) includes active duty military personnel killed in the Pentagon attack of 9/11/2001, those killed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan), and those killed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq). The museum contains an extensive research library, which is staffed on Sunday and is of particular value to scholars and students.

The museum welcomes, attracts and informs visitors of all ages, nationalities and ethnic groups. Docents who are well-versed in military history conduct regular tours.   The museum is also open for individual exploration.
