If you’re looking for educational entertainment in San Diego, you don’t have to go too far. A visit to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is the perfect way to spend a day with the kids.
Did you know?
- It’s the world’s first IMAX Dome Theater
- The world’s first NanoSeam™ Dome screen in an IMAX theater.
- One of only five in the world that offers two unique experiences in one space: IMAX films and planetarium shows.
The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is home to Southern California’s only Giant Dome Theater, named the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater, after being renovated in 2012.
The Heikoff Giant Dome Theater boasts a 76-foot tilted Dome screen and a 16,000-watt digital surround sound system, providing a stunning visual and audio experience.
If you’ve never experienced watching a movie or film on a dome theater, it’s an interesting experience! The Giant Dome Theater has a gigantic, curved screen that wraps the entire theater, giving you an immersive sensation and feeling that you’re in the show.
Watching an IMAX movie or film is amazing to behold on this giant screen, because IMAX films are projected by special projectors that weigh as much as a small car and enable the incredible film images to be projected with brightness and clarity on the huge Dome screen.
The planetarium shows are amazing as well, because they allow you to journey to the outer reaches of space from the comfort of your theater seat.
You can watch pre-produced programs, some of which are created by the science centers in-house team, or The Sky Tonight, which is a monthly live, astronomer-led planetarium show.
Don’t worry if you’re hearing-impaired or want to bring along a friend or family member who is because The Fleet (as it’s oft called) offers two options: closed-captions and assistive listening devices. When you buy your ticket, just let guest services know and they’ll tell you where to sit to use the service, or provide you with a complimentary headset.
Take the kids, grandma and grandpa too, and have a blast!
