  • Some of the best hiking can be found in the Lake Tahoe area with beautiful peaks, lakes, waterfalls and trees that makeup the landscape.ᅠ So, if you’re an outdoor enthusiast, avid adventurer, or hiking newbie we have a list of seven hiking trails you can take in the Tahoe area.ᅠ Some are even perfect for kids when you’re trying to find things to do in Tahoe on a family vacation!

    Carson Spur to Thunder Mountain: A steady hike up to Kirkwood’s ridgeline, you can follow this trail until you reach Glove Rock.ᅠ As you turn right and head to Thunder Mountain, you’ll have fantastic views overlooking Silver Lake and the lava formations beyond.ᅠ

    Gilmore Lake: This hike has a steady rise that takes you through the scenic alpine forest, glaciated lakes and interesting rock formations.ᅠ The way back is an easy hike downhill hike nearly the entire way, which would make this a great hike for the whole family.

    Carson to Echo: This one starts on the north side of Carson Pass, climbs about four-hundred vertical feet over the first several miles until you reach a pass with a small lake at the top.ᅠ Here you head down into Meiss Meadow and the junction of the Tahoe Rim Trail.ᅠ You’ll follow a trail that winds through the meadows and heads into the hills leading up to the stunningly beautiful Showers Lake.

    Freel Peak:ᅠ Considered the highest peak in the entire Lake Tahoe region, this is a trail that can be hiked in under four hours if you are in good shape and know the area.ᅠ The quickest and most direct route starts just under a mile south of Luther Pass on Highway 89.ᅠ You just follow the dirt road to the parking lot, and then hike up so you can get great views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

    Angora Lakes:ᅠ Found high above Lake Tahoe tucked neatly into a glacially carved bowl, you’ll find the Angora Lake Resort.ᅠ You can take a short one-mile hike up to this resort, where you will find a large sandy beach with shallow water perfect for the kids to splash around in. ᅠ

    Taylor Creek: This area runs from Fallen Leaf Lake to Kiva Beach at Lake Tahoe. It was once an alpine stream, but now contains interpretive hiking trails throughout the meadow where the creek approaches the lake, and plenty of scenery and stunning views as you walk the trail.

    Eagle Falls: This is probably one of the most popular trails to hike because of its spectacular beauty and stunning views of Emerald Bay and Lake Tahoe from the top. You’ll also come across several beautiful waterfalls, a white sandy beach, and historical Vikingsholm Castle. ᅠ
