If you’re a wine and food enthusiast, the Solterra Winery and Kitchen is the perfect place to go. From their award-winning wines to their tasty tapas, they offer some of the best food in San Diego. This local favorite and tourist destination is located in a historic building in downtown Leucadia, a charming laid-back town situated quietly along the San Diego coastline.
When you visit Solterra, you can choose to sample their award-winning wines which are made in-house or you can stop by to dine on rustic Mediterranean tapas. Both the wine and the food are sourced locally whenever possible, and they also feature several San Diego-produced beers on tap as well.
You can come by for a casual wine tasting during the day, or join them at 5:30 p.m. to enjoy a full-service Spanish tapas bar. The wines are made with grapes from locally sourced vineyards along with grapes from all over California and Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico.
The red wines are aged in predominately French oak barrels for at least 14 to 24 months, depending on the style and variety of wines they are producing. You can choose from 14 different red varieties, three whites, rose, port and late harvest wines which come either in the barrel or the bottle.
Solterra’s winery is situated only a few blocks from the beach in North County San Diego, where the weather is perfect for storing and aging the wine. There are two buildings at their location; the winery and the tasting room, which was built in 1957.
When you stop by to dine, you can choose from a varied menu of cold tapas, hot tapas, salads, flatbreads, and dessert. Known for their amazing tapas, they offer delicious choices such as Tortilla Espanola made with potato, sweet onion and egg or the Tri-Tip Beef Skewers made with espresso and a chili rub with dark chocolate balsamic reduction.
You can also dine on Marinated Mussels, the Gourmet Cheese Platter, or the delicious Charcuterie and Cheese Platter which comes with a selection of meats, cheeses, almonds, olives and stuffed dates. Finish your meal with a decadent dessert like the Raspberry Truffle, Chocolate Cake, or Crema Catalan paired with a French press coffee or Solterra wine.
Between their award-winning wines made in-house and their amazing food, a visit to Solterra Winery and Kitchen is a must-do the next time you want to enjoy sampling wine or dining out.
