Sweet Confections

I have always had the biggest sweet tooth. My fondness for sugary treats is something I definitely got from my dad and I have no shame in admitting it. This is why I was so excited to share all my favorite places to go when I have those cravings for chocolate, ice cream, cakes and more!

Sweets for the soul

One of the oldest candy stores in Reno is Sweets Handmade Candies. They have a location in Truckee too. They make all their candies with top-of-the-line Belgium chocolate. My personal favorite is their caramel — they just melt in your mouth! I frequently get their gift box of milk chocolate and dark chocolate caramel but they have so many options. They even have ice cream and locally made espresso. During every holiday they offer special truffles that you have got to try. The couple’s truffle is another favorite! sweetshandmadecandies.com

MM7_0119Step back in time at Rocket Fizz in South Lake Tahoe’s Heavenly Village. The amount of candy is overwhelming, in a good way! They have all the candies you remember growing up with, along with signs, accessories and more. As I child I loved razzles and I was so excited to see that candy along with so many others. My parents found candies I had never had before and my boyfriend acted like a kid again when they had his favorite, Ale-8-One ginger soda. This candy shop is so much fun to explore, you have got to see it yourself! rocketfizz.com

A local favorite is Tahoe Toffee Company. With products sold by many local businesses all over Reno/Tahoe, their signature Nevada-shaped candy is not hard to find and the perfect treat. I really love their peppermint bark and caramel corn. I love to give them as gifts but I always end up buying one for myself too! I can’t help it. To find a location to buy this delicious toffee be sure to visit their website. tahoetoffee.com

Chocolates for the 21+ crowd

If you’re looking for a little chocolate along with an adult beverage, you really need to try the jungle martini at The Jungle in Reno. It’s a mix of magpie espresso, vodka, Kahlúa and Baileys Irish Cream. I usually don’t drink really sweet cocktails but this martini is something I couldn’t pass up. Not only was the cocktail amazing but so was the atmosphere. Both the coffee and bar sides to The Jungle are homey and relaxing. I enjoy their coffee shop while answering some emails and grab a cocktail on the bar side after a long day of work. thejunglereno.com
Something my friends and I absolutely love is wine and chocolate! Dorinda’s Chocolates offers an awesome pairing any day of the week at their Reno and Squaw Valley locations. Whether you want a flight of white, red or two of each, they will pick the most complementing chocolate to go with it. I love to sit on their patio, even on a sunny day in the winter it’s cozy enough to sit outside! Everyone at Dorinda’s Chocolates is so knowledgeable about how the chocolate is made and why they chose that particular variety to accompany the wine. They even taught me the correct way to taste the pairing to get the full effect of the flavors together. This is always a good time and a great social event to enjoy two of my favorite things! dorindaschocolates.com

_M5_0885New to the Basement in Reno is Sugar Love. Every time I visit I always get a box to go because I can never get enough of all the flavor combinations they offer. I enjoy their traditional chocolates but also love how they have a flavor of the month. They, too, offer a pairing where you can taste the chocolate alongside adult beverages and learn about how the chocolate was made. Educational, fun and satisfying! sugarlovechocolates.com

Frozen treats

New to South Lake Tahoe is  Art of Gelato serving delicious gelato, sorbet and cupcakes. With so many flavors they’ll keep you coming back for more. No matter the weather their cool treats hit the spot. facebook.com/laketahoegelato

Baked with love

One of my favorite smells comes from Nothing Bunt Cakes in Reno. The second you walk in you are hypnotized by the fresh scent of their cakes and they have a great variety of sizes. Personally, I love their bundtinis. They are a perfect bite-size treat and I can enjoy a few different flavors without feeling bad about it. If you can’t make it into the store, they deliver locally as well! nothingbundtcakes.com
